Such an image reflected her father's life too closely for comfort. The small spark of hope that had sprung to life within her earlier became a tiny pinpoint of pain. D.J. wanted nothing to do with a soul mate. She had to put a stop to this nonsense before things got out of control. "Halt, stop, and whoa, McCall. You're crazy if you think I'm your soul mate. I'm the one who doesn't believe in love. Remember?"
"I'll teach you." He swung his feet over the edge of the bed.
"Freeze." D.J. put all the icy control she could muster into the command. McCall froze. "I don't want to learn. You just stay right there." Her voice wavered on the last word and D.J. winced.
McCall smiled at her, a lazy, sexy smile that started her sluggish heart to beat faster. He ignored her second command and started to walk toward her with all the resolution of the white tiger she'd once admired in the zoo.
D.J. retreated. Her back came up against the doorjamb. The scent of danger reached her nostrils, and she took a deep breath. The oxygen did nothing to calm the blood pumping through her body in an almost painful frenzy. He was going to touch her, to kiss her. He'd murmur in her ear and tell her, everything would be all right. He'd hold her and love her and make her need him too much. Then, when he left, part of her would leave with him.
McCall stood two steps away when D.J. spun and ran out the door. He made a grab for her, fingertips brushing the back of her shirt. But she jerked away and, thankfully, he let her go.
